KINDS OF GARAGE DOORS AND MATERIALS FROM WHICH THEY ARE MADE

Our specialty is the custom crafted wood garage door, which is still the highest quality garage door available. Wood garage doors are the most beautiful and architecturally most stylish, classy doors made. On a fine designed, expensive home, it is hard to imagine any door but a custom wood garage door living up to the high standards of look, style and architectural design provided.

A typical overhead garage door consists of several panels hinged together that roll along a system of tracks guided by rollers. The weight of the door is balanced by either a torsion spring system or a pair of extension springs.

There are several types of garage doors available. The oldest and classiest is wood. Wood is a great insulator and wood is heavy and solid, too. A few decades ago, manufacturers came up with a lighter, less expensive door, the steel door.

Steel garage doors are made from galvanized panels of steel, attached in the same way the wood panels are in wood doors – in hinged sections that fold as the door travels up a vertical track and onto a horizontal track. The garage door lifting systems are the same – only the material has been changed.

But steel isn’t a good insulator, so to compensate, they double up the panels and fill the space between them with polystyrene or polyurethane insulation. If you don’t need insulation, like for an outer shed or similar building, then a single-thickness steel door will do the job. Steel garage doors are far less nice in appearance than wooden doors, but they are less expensive than a beautiful, high quality wood, such as cedar, mahogony or walnut.

These days, more and more synthetic materials – composites made of combinations of other substances. Garage door manufacturers make good use of this technology. You can now get a "looks like wood" door that’s combined with resin for extra strength and durability. Or you can get a fiberglass garage door that’s also very durable. Vinyl is also a very useful material in the manufacture of garage doors. Vinyl garage doors are popular in the low end market because they are dent resistant. And if you have children that are constantly hitting the door with bikes or balls, then a dent-resistant door can be important.

THE GARAGE DOOR OPENER AND ITS ASSOCIATED HARDWARE

The most complicated part of a garage door is the opener and its hardware – the drive mechanism, the springs, the tracks, the brackets are all the parts that combine to make it work smoothly over and over and over again. There are all kinds of garage door springs and parts. One of the most important parts are the actual springs themselves. These powerful springs are under very high tension – that’s what gives them the strength to lift the weight of the door. If you look at a garage door, you’ll see either a set of springs, one on each side, or a long spring running across the top above the door.

The springs mounted on either side of a door are called extension springs. They’re usually used on single-car garages, because their mechanisms aren’t strong enough to hold the weight of a double door. You can see these springs stretched along the horizontal part of the track when the door’s closed.

Since there are more double garages than singles these days, the more popular spring system is the tension spring. You’ll see this spring mounted to the header, just above the top of the door. Tension springs can be extremely dangerous if tampered with. It’s a wound spring, which means it winds up into a coil, as opposed to the extension spring that expands and contracts. And because it winds up as the door closes, it holds a tremendous amount of tension. Any manufacturer will tell you that garage door installation of a tension spring type is a job for a professional only – it’s not to be tackled by amateurs.

And then there are the bottom brackets, the cable drums, the vertical and horizontal tracks with their track hangers, and all the screws, hinges and plates that hold them in place. All this hardware is designed to work together to create the smooth operation of your garage door.

The actual motor drive can be one of three types – chain drive, screw drive or belt drive. Many people are going with the belt drive today, even though it’s the most expensive, because of it’s smooth and quiet operation. But the chain drive system is also very popular because it’s the most affordable. The screw drive mechanism is slow-moving, so it’s used the least.

Contrary to popular belief, the electric opener does not provide the actual lifting power to open and close a heavy garage door. Instead, most of the actual lifting power comes from the counterbalance springs attached to the door. These springs are under tension to lift the garage door via steel counterbalance cables. The electric opener only controls how far the door opens and closes, as well as the force the garage door exerts. In most cases, the garage door opener also holds the door closed in place of a lock.

The typical electric garage door opener consists of a power unit that contains the electric motor. The power unit attaches to a track. A trolley connected to an arm that attaches to the top of the garage door slides back and forth on the track, thus opening and closing the garage door. The trolley is pulled along the track by a chain, belt, or screw that turns when the motor is operated. A quick-release mechanism is attached to the trolley to allow the garage door to be disconnected from the opener for manual operation during a power failure or in case of emergency. Limit switches on the power unit control the distance the garage door opens and closes once the motor receives a signal from the remote control or wall push button to operate the door.

The entire assembly hangs above the garage door. The power unit hangs from the ceiling and is located towards the rear of the garage. The end of the track on the opposite end of the power unit attaches to a header bracket that is attached to the header wall above the garage door. The power head is usually supported by punched angle iron.

Recently another type of opener, known as the jackshaft opener, has become more popular. This style of opener was used frequently on commercial doors but in recent years has been adapted for residential use. This style of opener consists of a motor that attaches to the side of the torsion rod and moves the door up and down by simply spinning the rod. These openers need a few extra components to function safely for residential use. These include a cable tension monitor, to detect when a cable is broken, and a separate locking mechanism to lock the door when it is fully closed. These have the advantage that they free up ceiling space that an ordinary opener and rail would occupy. These also have the disadvantage that the door must have a torsion rod to attach the motor to.

Additional features that have been added over the years have included:

  • Automatic courtesy lights that turn on when the door opens (or via motion sensors) and automatically turn off after a preset time delay
  • A remote lockout feature, which turns off the radio receiver while one is on vacation or away for an extended time.
  • The availability of accessories has increased, including such features as wireless keypads, key chain remotes, and solenoid-operated deadbolts to lock the door itself.

THE GARAGE DOOR - A PART OF THE HOUSE - CREATING CONTINUITY OF STYLE

Almost all garages these days are attached to the house. Because of this, garage builders look for ways to create continuity with the house, designing it to blend with its style and color. And they’ve done well. You can get a wide variety of glass or acrylic windows for your garage door, to match the windows in the house. And garage doors come in many styles and colors now, for the same reason. And you know that screen door you have on your patio? Well, you can get one for your garage, too. Garage door screens allow you to leave the door open while you work in there, without being bothered by bugs and dust.

And here’s another unique idea. Do you have a boat or an RV, or something you need to keep covered that doesn’t fit into your garage? Then you need a portable garage. Portable garages are great for storing larger items. They also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They usually consist of a clear or colored UV-resistant, fire-retardant plastic sheeting or tarp that stretches over a frame of metal tubing. You can even get an instant portable garage for those temporary situations where you need shelter.

The garage door is the largest, heaviest moving object in the house, and that’s why it requires so much care and attention when you’re building. But once it’s installed, you can pretty well forget about it. So compare custom wood garage doors to any other kind, and you can enjoy an excellent garage, with a beautiful garage door, and an efficient garage door opener. And your home will stand out in its neighborhood, because it is amazing how much the look of your home is affected by its garage doors. This large and dominant architectural feature goes vary far toward creating the impression your home makes when viewed fom the street or up close.
